My Organic Skincare Routine

Did you know our skin is the largest organ of our body? Skin is permeable to lotions, soaps, serums, shampoos and other skincare items we use. What we put on our body is absorbed into our body. It is important to consider the amount of toxins you are both consuming and applying to your skin. Your toxic load could add up and have adverse reactions on your health. The best solution to reducing the amount of toxins your skin is absorbing is switching some or all of your skincare products to organic.

I slowly have been incorporating more and more organic skincare into my daily regimen to reduce the amount of harmful and harsh ingredients my body is taking in. Now that I have a well-established product line-up, I thought it would be fun to share My Organic Skincare Routine with you!

Adding new skincare products to my routine took research and trial to discover which brands are the most complimentary to my skin type. I was also on a mission to find the best way to tackle aging, by smoothing fine lines and wrinkles, with skincare products I could use at home without breaking the bank at the spa. I have combination skin, with a forehead that tends to be on the oilier side of the spectrum, and cheeks that require more moisture.  I have a Mediterranean background and tend to get dark spots on my cheeks and have dark skin under my eyes. I am happy to say I have found organic products to address all my skincare needs while being gentle and safe on my body.

Whether you want to try out some brands from My Organic Skincare Routine or do some research on your own, some harmful ingredients to steer clear of when looking into skincare products include phthalates, parabens and synthetic fragrance.

Harmful Ingredients:

Phthalates: Chemicals used in  cosmetics including soap, shampoo, lotion, perfume and hair spray. Health consequences of phthalates include reports of negative impacts on neurodevelopment and damage to the reproductive system, lungs liver and kidneys.

Parabens: Artificial preservatives used in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals that extend shelf life. Parabens have scientifically been proven to have harmful effects on both the female and male reproductive systems, disrupt hormones and put you at a higher risk for cancer. Some harmful parabens include: propylparaben, isopropylparaben, butylparaben and isobutylparaben. For more information on parabens in cosmetics ewg.org is a great resource.

Synthetic Fragrance: Since the FDA does not have strict mandates on skincare items, the ingredient “fragrance” listed on products is quite vague and moreover dangerous and concerning. Some ingredients in synthetic fragrances have been linked to toxicity, cancer and reproductive harm.  Toxic chemicals in fragrances can include benzophenone and acetaldehyde, which in the state of CA are both listed under Prop 65 as possible human carcinogens.

Luckily for us consumers, more organic options are becoming readily available due to increased demand. Making the choice to use organic skincare products is not only beneficial to your health it is also much cleaner on the environment!
